Health Insurance Information

What kinds of health insurance are there?
There are essentially two kinds of heath insurance: Fee-for-Service and Managed Care. Although these plans differ, they both cover an array of medical, surgical and hospital expenses. Most cover prescription drugs and some also offer dental coverage.

  1. Fee-for-Service
These plans generally assume that the medical professional will be paid a fee for each service provided to the patient. Patients are seen by a doctor of their choice and the claim is filed by either the medical provider or the patient.

  2. Managed Care
More than half of all Americans have some kind of managed-care plan1. Various plans work differently and can include: health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred provider organizations (PPOs) and point-of-service (POS) plans. These plans provide comprehensive health services to their members and offer financial incentives to patients who use the providers in the plan.
The most common types of managed-care plans are HMOs and PPOs. They are very different in pricing/cost structure and flexibility in care provider choice.
    a. HMO
HMO is short for Health Maintenance Organizations. Members of an HMO must select a primary-care physician and service with another physician is only available through referral from the primary one. In addition, the cost of services performed by a doctor outside the network is much higher that it can outweigh the cost savings of an HMO plan.
In general, the premiums for HMOs are lower than PPOs because the cost is spread out among a limited number of members.

    b. PPO
Though similar to an HMO in structure, a PPO offers members greater flexibility when they choose services provided by physicians outside the plan's network. Additional benefits may also be included in a PPO, too, such as prescription drug plans. To provide for these more flexible benefits, PPOs tend to have a higher premium than HMOs.

Determining what type of plan works best for your needs and financial situation can be a tricky one. Usually, advice from an insurance expert is much desirable to figure out your plan.
